Blobs, and Yarn Tangles Might Just Be Your Therapists

In a world overflowing with push notifications and online chaos, escape comes in the unexpected form of a squishy ball of clay, or a glue stick wielded with purpose. Craft workshops are more than just artsy distractions; they’re full-on mental health boosters. Whether you’re moulding mugs or painting masterpieces, here’s why getting crafty keeps your brain blissfully balanced:

Mindfulness With a Side of Mud

Pottery is the ultimate hands-on meditation. That steady rhythm of shaping, smoothing, and spinning is like a spa day for your mind. And let’s be honest, when you’re trying to centre a lump of clay that refuses to behave, your brain has no room for worries. Whether you’re painting a pot or threading beads, crafting forces you into the present moment where stress goes to nap

Confidence Served on a Handmade Platter

You made that slightly wonky, charming bowl? Stand tall, creator! Nothing beats the thrill of turning raw materials into something uniquely yours, even if it resembles a pancake more than a plate. Crafting (yes, pottery too!) offers bite-sized achievements that give your self-esteem a hearty high-five.

Clay-Mates and Crafty Comrades

Workshops are social glue, minus the awkward small talk. Bonding over lopsided mugs and glitter explosions is surprisingly effective at forging friendships. Whether you’re passing tools or sharing kiln anxiety, connection thrives in shared creative chaos.

Sharpen That Noggin

Every brushstroke, clay coil, or thread tug keeps your neurons dancing. Pottery invites your brain to play with problem-solving and spatial reasoning in 3D. Its mental gymnastics disguised as sculptural serenity. You’ll flex fine motor skills and your imagination at the same time, who knew finger painting was brain training?

Feel Your Feelings… Through Clay

Not sure how to say what’s brewing inside? Squish it into a sculpture. Art offers an expressive outlet, whether you’re painting a stormy sky or poking holes in clay just for the drama. Channelling emotions through craft is healing, even if it leaves you covered in paint splatters and clay crumbs.

Purpose With Every Pot and Pom-Pom

There’s something deeply grounding about finishing a creative piece. It’s like ticking off a to-do list but with way more fun. From wheel-thrown vases to chunky scarves, each project gives you direction, and possibly some lovely handmade gifts.

Break Up with Your Screens

Modern life: 15 tabs open, none of them productive. Crafting life: one messy table and total joy. Pottery especially pulls you into the physical world, clay doesn’t respond to touchscreens. You’re forced to look up, feel texture, and slow down. Refreshing, right?

Emotional CPR via Craft

Crafting gently nudges your feelings out of their hiding places. Need to process a tough week? Your clay vase understands. Need to let go of anxiety? Knit through it. Creating offers emotional clarity without the awkward therapist stare.

Pure, Unfiltered Fun

Crafting is fun, and let’s not pretend otherwise. There’s uncontrollable laughter, unexpected flops, and beautiful surprises. Pottery has its own drama: will this mug survive the kiln, or will it come out looking like a baked potato? Either way, you’ll leave with stories and smiles.

My Recent Clay-tastic Adventure

I recently ventured down to Exmouth for a workshop with the fabulous Potty Joy, a crafting wizard and absolute delight of a tutor. In two glorious hours, I created a Highland cow that now stares at me proudly from my shelf. I’m heading back soon, bottle of wine in tow, which means next time my cow might have three eyes and loop-sided horns.
